Dear Walden West Families,

We hope this finds each of you healthy, enjoying a slower pace of life, and finding the positive moments during this most unusual time.

Thank you so much to those of you who were able to respond to the survey that was sent out in our last email. We are using your responses as we plan for summer. One of your main requests was for more communication and we want to share our next steps with you.

We are currently creating strategies for Walden West to run summer camp with many different contingencies, while following federal, state, and local guidelines.  These strategies, your survey results, and our recommended operational plans are coming together in a proposal we are preparing for this year’s summer camp that we will send to the County Superintendent of Schools of the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) for approval.

We’ve always felt the safety and well-being of our campers is our number one priority for Walden West Outdoor School and Summer Camp. Having reviewed the best currently available information concerning COVID-19 and after careful consideration, we are recommending that sessions June 8-July 3, 2020 be cancelled. A delayed start time would be in the best interest of the community because it would give us the opportunity for extra planning and preparation during these unprecedented times.

Some things have been decided. Because of health concerns with the close proximity of campers on the buses, we have made the decision to cancel bus transportation this summer. Similarly, we won’t run the challenge course. In restructuring summer camp, we have also decided to cancel the Wild Things sessions because the little Wild Things are too young for successful physical distancing.

We know that our counselors and the campers, families, and staff who were planning to be with us in the beginning of the summer and for Wild Things will be very disappointed. We share in that disappointment. We have been keeping the magic of Walden West alive for those who can’t be here by rolling out our social media content on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Channel.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions. Most answers to questions that you might have will come after the Superintendent’s decision. It is our hope that we have a decision by next week; however, more information or planning may be requested for a final determination. We will keep you informed as things progress.

Kindest Regards,
